We have our own Oxford Sandy and Black pigs. An old local breed with a distinctive orange coat with black spots. They are a slow growing breed, outdoor reared and fed mainly on pig nuts but also apples during the autumn and all unwanted veg direct from the garden.
The vegetable garden is a wonderful work in progress. It is hard growing veg! everything else seems to want to eat it first. But I am passionate about the field to fork journey and love the huge variety of produce that can be grown – even things that are associated with more tropical climates – I have managed to grow watermelons in the poly tunnel! Growing the quantity that I need for the supper club is going to be a challenge and one that will take a few years to evolve and perfect. At the moment I am the gardener so lack of time is also the limiting factor! I grow organically and am really interested in the concepts of permaculture, no dig gardening and biodynamic gardening.
We have two orchards with pear, apple, plum, quince and cherry trees.
At the moment soft fruits include strawberries, redcurrants and raspberries.
Dill, sage, thyme and rosemary are my mainstay year round favourite herbs, during the warmer months I grow basil, coriander and parsley and I hope the list will grow. I also grow micro greens indoors and in the poly tunnel and green house.
Nettles, Elderflowers, blackberries, elderberries, crab apples, rose hips all grow in abundance in our hedgerows. I make full use of these fabulous hedgerow delights especially during the early autumn.
Our free range chickens, ducks and guniea fowl lay delicious eggs with a creamy deep yellow yolk.
